Repair the updater's local-tool error

If Garry Updates says A required local verification tool did not complete during installation, the reviewed original updater contains a wrong path for Debian's disk-checking tool. This small repair recognizes only that exact updater version, verifies the correct tool and your USB persistence, backs up the original updater, then corrects its path.

Download updater repair

  1. Close Garry Updates and download the repair above.
  2. In your terminal, run sudo python3 -I ~/Downloads/garry-updater-repair.py.
  3. Wait for Garry updater repaired and verified. Run garry-updates, then Check for updates → Download update → Install for next restart.

The repair does not format the USB, install a release, change boot files or signing keys, or restart the computer. If it reports an unexpected version or another error, keep the USB connected and show the message. Restart only after the main update confirms success.

Rufus preflight fix is available

Update stopped at preflight?

Download this read-only check to show the exact reason. It verifies the signed release and reads the USB's boot files. It does not install an update, format, restart or change your boot or personal files.

Download read-only USB check

Then open Xfce Terminal and run:

python3 -I ~/Downloads/usb-update-check.py

Wait for CHECK FINISHED and send Garry a photo of the result.

GARRY / USB UPDATES

Update over Wi-Fi.
Keep your saved work.

Install the updater once in Garry. After that, use the Garry Updates desktop button from any compatible computer with an internet connection.

One-time setup on your existing USB

Download Garry Updates

  1. Boot into Garry and connect to your trusted Wi-Fi.
  2. Download this ZIP and extract it. Open the extracted folder.
  3. Open a terminal in that folder and run sudo python3 -I install-updater.py. This installs the update button; it does not yet apply an operating-system update.
  4. Open Garry Updates from Applications → System, or its desktop shortcut.

The one-time setup requires working writable persistence so the updater remains after restart. It does not format the drive. If the USB still will not boot, use the maintenance kit from a working computer first.

Everyday updates

  1. Click Check for updates.
  2. Download and review the release details.
  3. Choose Install for next restart, then finish your work and restart when ready.

Routine supported Garry updates use this flow without Rufus. Saved files and the persistence partition stay in place. Updates do not trigger an automatic restart.

What the updater verifies

Original files are backed up, writes are checked, and a receipt records what happened. A power interruption or failing USB can still require recovery.

An ISO written in raw/DD mode may be read-only and cannot use this file-update path. The updater reports that limitation instead of formatting or changing partitions. Physical installation and reboot on your particular USB still need verification. Signing a release does not establish that a computer is secure or that Windows login can be bypassed.
